DHEMAJI: In a very sad incident, a woman drowned after the boat she was in capsized in the Dhemaji district of Assam on Sunday. The police mentioned that the woman was on her way to perform Bihu when the accident took place.

According to the authorities, the Bihu team comprising a total of 8 people were aboard the ill-fated boat. The people were on their way to Chapori (Sitaram Ghat) to take part in a Bihu celebration on Sunday.

A team of rescuers from Assam Police rushed to the spot soon after the incident. While they were successful in rescuing seven people who were onboard the boat, one woman could not be saved by the rescue team. She was later identified as one Maloti Munda.

Meanwhile, the Tinsukia district of the state suffered a massive storm which caused widespread damage across the entire district. While a total of 208 houses were reported to be completely destroyed, 675 houses were said to be partially damaged in the severe storm. With trees uprooted at multiple locations, the power supply has also been disrupted by the disaster.

A total of 41410 people have seen said to have been affected by the storms across a total of 144 villages in the state. Out of them, 37182 people have been affected across the 54 villages of the state making it one of the worst affected districts of the state. It also resulted in two deaths in the district.

Deputy Commissioner of Tinsukia, Swapneel Paul mentioned a compensation of Rs 4 lakhs to the families of each of the deceased in the natural disaster. He also ordered the closure of all educational institutions in the district on Monday in view of the possibility of more storms in the region as well as the necessary restoration work after the storm.
